From First Cast to Forever Hooked

I came to Alaska expecting a fun girls’ trip. What I didn’t expect was to fall in love with fly fishing. As someone completely new to the sport, I was a little intimidated traveling with four girl-friends who already had experience. From the moment we arrived at Crystal Creek Lodge, those nerves disappeared. You’re not treated like a guest, you’re welcomed like family. The entire team, from the front of the house to the guides and lodge staff, is exceptional. Their passion for Alaska, conservation, hospitality, hunting and fishing shines through in everything they do. As a beginner, I never once felt overwhelmed. My guides were patient, encouraging, and genuinely excited to teach, making every cast, every fish, and every lesson memorable. The lodge itself is beautiful. It’s immaculate, incredibly comfortable, and every detail reflects the spirit and beauty of Alaska. The scenery is simply breathtaking, and the waters you’ll fish are unlike anywhere else. Beyond the incredible fishing, it was the people, both the staff and the other guests, who made the experience unforgettable. Whether you’re picking up a fly rod for the very first time or you’ve been fishing for decades, Crystal Creek Lodge is a place that will exceed your expectations. I arrived as a first-time fly angler and left completely hooked, not just on the fishing, but on the experience, the people, and the magic of Alaska. If you’re considering an Alaska hunting or fishing trip, I can’t recommend Crystal Creek Lodge highly enough. It’s more than a destination, it’s an experience you’ll never forget.

16 Trips and Still the Best

This was my 16th visit to Crystal Creek. Besides excellence in the guides' expertise, Beaver fly-outs, hospitality, Chef Brian's innovative cuisine, top of the line fishing equipment, and lodge, what struck me this time was how smooth and flexible Alex and Heather are dealing with the logistics of weather, varied guest groupings, and scheduling. They made sure every day offered adventures that were safe and filled with memory making awe.

First-Class Experience from Start to Finish

We just returned from another incredible trip to Crystal Creek Lodge, and once again they exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived, the entire staff made us feel like family. Heather, Alex and the whole team go above and beyond to create an experience that is first-class in every way. The accommodations are comfortable, the food is outstanding, and every detail is thoughtfully taken care of. The fishing is obviously world-class, but it is the people that made the trip absolutely amazing. The guides are knowledgeable, hardworking, and genuinely invested in making each day memorable, whether you're chasing trophy salmon, or simply enjoying the beauty of Alaska.

Shipping Fish

Everything was excellent! Room, food, guides, hospitality, responsiveness were all top service. Alex and Heather were always there to answer questions. My only suggestion would be to provide more help with shipping fish back home. I had to do research on my own as to how to get my fish sent back home. Since I was continuing my vacation in Alaska I had to find a cold storage company at the airport then a few days later when I returned to Anchorage airport I had to pick the fish up and then take a ride over to FedEx to ship my fish back home. Lots of logistics. FYI - I couldn't find anything at the Anchorage airport to ship my fish back to my home. Thanks, Don

The Gold Standard for Fishing and Hospitality

The team at Crystal Creek always delivers exceptional fishing and world class accommodations. The meals were once again delicious! And the guides that spend every day making the experience memorable are what separate this lodge from the rest. My 14th year and hopefully more to come.

Only the BEST!

This has got to be the one of the BEST lodges on the planet (I've been to a few). The staff did every they you can think of including making you feel like you are at home and part of the family. They have every thing you need for a fishing trip and more. This lodge has access to the best fishing on the Bristol Bay area everyday and the guides to make sure you are successful. I can't forget the food, every meal was world class and made to order, absolutely fantastic cooking from some amazing chefs. Thanks Heather, Alex and rest of you for providing me with memories of a lifetime. If you are going to spend the money spent it here.

Great fishing and great customer experience.

I went for the fishing and hoped for a great experience. I got it all. As a business owner who thinks about the employee and customer experience I saw and experienced both. The guides were all positive on how they are treated and it was represented in how they treated us as customers. They were also just fun to be with in spite of how much hiking they convinced this old guy to do. If they see this they will know who I’m talking about. Of course the Alaska setting is great but the effort put into the customer experience was exceptional. Clean well planned accommodations. Boats, planes and waders, tackle were in great condition and reliable. Finally the food was over the top from what I expected. Heather stepped in and helped us change flights out and made a restaurant reservation for us in Anchorage. Totally unexpected. Cannot say enough good things. Highly recommend!

Perfect Alaskan Fishing trip!

After reading a few years of reviews on Crystal Creek Lodge we realized that we needed and wanted to review the lodge differently. We echo every positive review going back several years, it is all true! All the wonderful accolades mentioning the caring staff, meticulous owners, over the top chefs, great accommodations, professional guides and pilots, top notch equipment from boats and planes to fishing equipment, waders and boots. In our opinion, what sets Crystal Creek apart are the extra details that make the experience over the top. Crystal Creek is positively the cleanest multi guest accommodation we have ever stayed in. (we are 68 and 71) There is no corner, floor, surface or public space that is not touched at least daily, and sometimes multiple times per day to make the environment spotless at all times. Staff and owners are listening and watching to meet every need, indoors and out. One day I asked Heather how to get heat to our large room. She told me about the floor heat I had not noticed and immediately turned it up. When we returned to our room, there was an electric blanket on my side of the bed. We genuinely thought someone had put the blanket in the wrong room since neither of us had asked for an electric blanket. The staff member heard me and said, “I put it there after you said you were cold. I just wanted to make sure you had it to use if you got cold. ” That is the epitome of care, listening, and service. During a different day I noticed the native made house shoes in a case for sale in the lodge. Heather said she would look and see if they had my size. The ones in the case looked too small. 2 days later they were on my bed with a note that they were able to pick some up in town for me! My husband mentioned enjoying the use of a certain weight rod and certain color streamer fly when fishing for trout. It was just an offhand comment. The next day the boat contained just that rod and fly. Not only is this staff attentive but always listening. We were stunned by the meticulous detail with which the truly professional guide staff gives instruction. Their articulate communication method (sequence of words in expressing how to do something) is the same across all the guide staff. There is no misunderstanding instruction - for fishing or focusing on safety at all times! The guide staff is so adaptable to multiple skill levels in a group, even of two. My husband never had to take care of me and worry about me slipping in a stream or not catching fish. The guide staff always made sure that I had as good a day as he did. My husband had recently had knee surgery and on the last day he needed to give his knee a rest. Alex was able to suggest the perfect solution and we flew to a beautiful lake with a water fall. Out from the plane pops a deflated blow up raft us to fish out of and we fished for lake trout, then went into the mouth of the river and were taught 4 new techniques going down different parts of the river with a guide that had spent more than 4 years on that river. We both caught fish using all 4 techniques! All our days at Chrystal Creek were wonderful and we would unquestionably recommend them for your Alaska fishing adventure! A Masterclass in Curated Experience

My recent visit to Crystal Creek Lodge was nothing short of exceptional. What stood out most wasn’t just the breathtaking Alaskan setting, but the level of intentionality behind every detail of the experience. It’s clear that what they’ve built didn’t happen overnight—this is the result of years of listening, refining, and thoughtfully curating what makes a stay truly memorable. From the seamless hospitality to the personalized touches throughout the trip, every moment felt purposeful and elevated. The team operates with a quiet precision that reflects deep experience and a genuine commitment to their guests. Whether on the water, in the lodge, or sharing stories at the end of the day, there’s a consistent sense that every element has been carefully considered. Crystal Creek Lodge isn’t just a destination—it’s a masterclass in how exceptional experiences are designed and delivered over time. I left not only impressed but genuinely inspired.

Over the top experience

I had the opportunity to visit the Crystal Creek Lodge as part of a customer event and had the adventure of a lifetime. I am not a fisherman, despite having multiple boats. The staff was patient, insightful and helped me catch more fish than I have cumulatively in a lifetime. The gear was also top notch. . . and I do have some insight here. I was thankful that this was an Orvis shop. . . it made everything easy. The lodge is First Class along with the food from Chef Bryan and the crew. I hope to get to come back some time with my family or with colleagues.

Spectacular!!

If you're looking for a world-class fishing destination, Crystal Creek Lodge absolutely delivers—but what makes it truly exceptional goes far beyond the fishing. The fishing is everything it's advertised to be, with knowledgeable guides, incredible scenery, and opportunities to catch fish you'll be talking about for years. But what really sets Crystal Creek Lodge apart is the hospitality. From the moment you arrive, the entire staff makes you feel like family. Every detail is thoughtfully handled, and their genuine warmth and commitment to creating an unforgettable experience is evident in everything they do. Crystal Creek Lodge has perfected the combination of adventure, luxury, and genuine hospitality. Even if the fishing weren't among the best in the world, the people, food, and spectacular environment would make it worth the trip. I can't recommend it highly enough and am already looking forward to returning.

A Masterclass in Hospitality and Excellence

My experience at Crystal Creek Lodge was truly exceptional. While the lodge is widely celebrated as a premier destination for anglers - and deservedly so - what resonated most deeply for me was the seamless blend of professional capability and genuine hospitality. The entire team stewards the operation with an efficiency that is both meticulous and welcoming. They managed every logistical detail with precision while maintaining a culture of warmth and comfort. I left feeling energized and I cannot recommend this lodge highly enough for anyone seeking a destination that delivers on both form and function.

The Class of Bristol Bay

The Crystal Creek Lodge team combines highly tuned awareness to personal needs and environmental conditions with a relaxed family atmosphere. Don't know how they pull both of those things off at once, but that's the CCL way. Appreciate Dan, Alex, Heather and team's commitment to stewardship as well. Once you go, you won't want to leave.

Great fishing and exceptional service

We had a great trip to CCL in the summer of 2026. The fishing was strong, the food was even better, but the personal service is what really puts it over the top. Weather looked like it might be an issue on our flight out. I let Heather know that and she proactively booked us two tickets on a flight the next day as a backup plan. The kitchen staff, fishing guides, pilots and owners are all great people that are personally invested in making your trip the best it can be.

Best Lodge & Guides in Alaska

I’ve had the privilege of visiting Crystal Creek Lodge multiple times, and what continues to set it apart are the fundamentals—they are simply flawless. The hospitality is exceptional, the attention to detail is unmatched, and the entire experience is executed at a level that feels effortless. The food alone is worth the trip: five-star dinners, over-the-top desserts, and incredible lunches out in the field that somehow rival what you’d expect from a top restaurant—not a remote Alaskan lodge. But this year, for me, it was all about the fishing guides. There’s a perception that being a guide is glamorous—spending your days on the water, catching fish, and enjoying the outdoors. The reality is very different. The days are long and demanding. They start early with organizing gear, preparing rods, coordinating planes and boats, and packing food. They end late—cleaning equipment, resetting for the next day, and still making time for guests back at the lodge. Through it all, they show up with energy, professionalism, and a genuine smile. Guiding isn’t a path to getting rich. You don’t do it for tangled lines, unpredictable conditions, or listening to guests exaggerated fishing stories. You do it because you truly love fishing, the outdoors, and sharing that passion with others. What stood out to me this year is that Crystal Creek did not turn over a single guide from the prior year—a rare accomplishment in this industry. That says a lot about the culture Alex and Heather Oberholtzer have built. These guides do far more than put you on fish. They connect, teach, lead, net, untangle, coach, take photos, laugh, and ultimately create experiences that stay with you long after the trip is over. They are world-class at what they do—but more importantly, they are genuinely great people. To the guides at Crystal Creek: you are the best of the best in Alaska. Crystal Creek has built something rare—an ecosystem of hospitality, service, and execution inside the lodge that is matched only by the stunning natural ecosystem right outside its doors.

First Class Fishing Vacation

This was my fourth fishing trip to Alaska and Crystal Creek Lodge was by far the nicest lodge and well trained staff that I have experienced. Having their own mud room was so nice for storing and organizing all of the fishing gear and supplies. The rooms in the lodge were super comfortable. The fishing guides were all very professional and knowledgeable of their fishing sites. The kitchen staff were over the top with the meals they served. Overall the staff was very accommodating, efficient, and helpful. Their gust relations manager Heather Oberholtzer was tremendous in helping us prepare for our vacation. I would absolutely recommend visiting this lodge for a first class fishing vacation.

Perfection!

I just spent some time at the Crystal Creek Lodge. An amazing experience. All of the details have been thought out and planned so all I had to do was enjoy the Alaskan Bush adventures and many good conversations. Accommodations and dinning were first class. The fishing gear was the best and the airplanes showed a lot of perfection. Being a pilot myself, I appreciated the skill and professionalism of all of the pilots. The Crystal Creek guides and staff were all friendly, helpful, and skilled. Communication and planning was outstanding. I do not know how it could get any better!

A new hobby that is here to stay! Thnak you CCL

I didn't know orvis existed since I had never gone fishing before. I am impressed by the brand, from the king crab eating instruments to the full-on suit to be moving around King Salmon without getting wet. These are the kind of gadgets that make you want to keep on 'adventure traveling'. Thank you Crystal Creek Lodge for introducing me to fishing, a hobby I’d like keep on doing for sure. Also, doing it near those precious bears! What a way to enhance the experience! CCL, I can’t thank you guys enough! You’ve exceeded my expectations and sent me back home with the most beautiful experience. And most importantly, thank you for making me feel at home, so far away from home. You guys are the absolute best, we’ve had so much fun. You guys are loving, patient and full of surprises. I was hoping to see bears, but the fishing, the lodge, the massage, the company, the food, the landscapes… it was all a dream. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

What about Lodge of the Decade?

In our travels, no matter how spectacular, we have never repeated a destination. . . . until after our first trip to Crystal Creek Lodge in 2024. We promptly booked for the following year. After our most recent trip in September 2025, we decided after the first day back to book again for 2026. The reason we return is simple. Crystal Creek Lodge is the best of the best (and we have visited multiple Orvis endorsed Lodge of the Year winners). Crystal Creek Lodge stands out due to their : vast array of phenomenal locations to visit, expert pilots, fishing guides extraordinaire, superb lodging, and chef (Brian) prepared meals to rival any in Alaska or the lower forty-eight. The Lodge exudes a warm, inviting atmosphere with a staff that treats each guest like a much loved family member. As the entire staff waved goodbye from the front porch, we reflected on the magical moments of our stay; Reluctant to leave yet anxious to return.

Once in lifetime experience. . .

Our time at Crystal Creek Lodge was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, the hospitality of the staff made us feel immediately welcomed and cared for. Every detail was thoughtfully handled, and their warmth set the tone for a truly memorable experience. What stood out most was the team’s ability to engage with us—not just as guests, but as partners in the adventure. Whether it was sharing stories over a meal, guiding us on the river, or preparing us for an incredible bear-viewing experience, they demonstrated professionalism paired with a genuine passion for what they do. The food was outstanding, the fishing unforgettable, and the opportunity to witness bears in their natural habitat was awe-inspiring. Just as important, the sense of teamwork and camaraderie among both the staff and our group elevated every activity. It truly felt like everyone was invested in making the experience remarkable. Crystal Creek Lodge is more than a destination—it’s a place where hospitality, adventure, and human connection come together seamlessly. We leave with wonderful memories, new friendships, and an eagerness to return.
