September Slabs is no exaggeration — it’s a full-on celebration of the thick-shouldered, crimson-sided rainbow trout that haunt our rivers each late summer and fall. By September, these trout are at their absolute peak: heavy, powerful, and pushing the tape at 30 inches or more. They’ve spent the entire summer feeding, not daintily sipping tiny insects from the surface but gorging on a banquet of salmon eggs, salmon fry, and even chunks of nutrient-rich salmon flesh. The result is fish that fight like freight trains and will launch into the air like a missile. It’s the time of year when every drift has a shot at a true slab — the kind of trout that lives in your head rent-free and refuses to leave. As a bonus, there’s orange & gold Arctic Char of similar caliber to be caught as well as legions of fat Dolly Varden.

If you can make it this year, the last six remaining spots of our season are available September 14-21. Peak time. Wader up!
