Visions of Katmai
The Wildlife, Scenery, and Brown Bears of Katmai National Park & Preserve
When people envision Katmai, they think of brown bears and salmon… mostly bears. Yes, Katmai is one of the premier brown bear viewing areas in the world but it is also a wonderful backyard playground for guests at Crystal Creek Lodge to explore the wonders of remote Alaska. The landscape and wildlife of Katmai are as pure and as wild as Alaska gets. By the end of July, a million fish may have moved from Bristol Bay into the Naknek system of lakes and rivers. In just a few months, the bears have gorged on enough salmon to pack on some serious pounds. Roughly 2200 brown bears are estimated to inhabit the park, and more bears than people are estimated to live on the Alaska Peninsula. As many bear populations around the world decline, Katmai provides a remaining unaltered habitat for these amazing creatures. And, the fishing is amazing as well.
